Boarding FAQs

Candles, incense, and open-flame devices are prohibited in all residence halls.

Currently, the rooms in Arnold, McCammack and Koivu-Patterson Hall have carpeting. Carpenter Hall does not have carpet in the dorm rooms. However, all dorms have carpet in the social areas.

Students who are required by the Academy to remain on campus during break periods will be the only ones housed during times when the Academy is otherwise closed, such as Winter and Summer breaks, with proper faculty supervision. Break schedules and specific dates will be communicated by the Dean of Students. Dormitories will remain open during Thanksgiving and Spring breaks for a fee of $100 per day, per student.

The five computer labs located on campus are listed below:

• A computer lab in the Media Arts building
• Yearbook Lab in Fine Arts Building
• Upper School Lab in the Upper School building room US13
• Language Lab in the Gebauer Building
• Lower School computer lab
   

Students in grades 9-12 be assigned an iPad for use during the school year.

Internet access is wireless and accessible throughout campus.

Adjusting to a new roommate can take time and effort. We encourage you to start by having an open conversation with your roommate about any issues or concerns. If you're unable to resolve the situation, please reach out to your Dorm Parent, Dean of Students, or Prefect for support. Room changes will only be considered after all other options have been explored.

Only students who are required to be on campus by the Academy will be permitted to return before the scheduled arrival date. This guideline is in place to ensure the completion of scheduled renovation projects, the transition to summer housing, and final preparations for students’ arrival.

Students will receive their rooming assignments upon returning to campus. Returning students will have the opportunity to request a roommate for the following school year. While we will do our best to honor these requests, there is no guarantee, and we ask that both the student and their family support the Academy’s decisions in this process.

Depending upon your needs, the answer to this question may vary. However, below is an itemized list of items that current students suggest you bring or purchase upon arrival: 

• Backpack

• Bedding (extra-long twin sheets, blankets, comforters, and pillow)
• Camera
• Comfortable shoes and boots
• Clothing (seasonal items including a winter coat and gloves)
• Bathrobe and shower shoes
• Desk lamp/study light
• Dishes (coffee mugs, drinking glasses, eating utensils, etc.)
• Entertainment needs (Books, reasonable stereo/radio, board games, sports equipment, etc.)
• Basic first aid kit (for example: Band-Aids, Neosporin, etc.)
• Formal and semi-formal attire (for special events)
• Clothes hangers
• Laundry supplies and basket
• Lap Desk
• Small memo or dry erase board
• Appropriate pictures/posters – Inappropriate subjects include: Drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.) Pictures/posters containing inappropriate  material will be removed at the discretion of the Dorm Parent and/or Administration

Each dorm floor has a laundry room in their specific floor with a washer and dryer. The school charges a flat fee at the beginning of the year for the students to wash and dry throughout the school year. Students are able to iron in the laundry room only and are asked not to hang wet clothing to dry in their rooms.

Housekeeping services are not provided for student rooms, suites, or private bathrooms. Students are responsible for cleaning and maintaining these areas. Public areas and bathrooms are cleaned Monday through Friday, with limited service on weekends. Students must empty their room trash in the designated area and will be assigned daily chores to help maintain the cleanliness of the dormitory.

The best way to report a maintenance concern is by informing the Dorm Parent. When reporting an issue, it’s important for students to be as detailed as possible. Key information to include includes the location, a description of the problem, and a contact name and number.

Mattresses in the residence halls are 36 x 79.5. These are longer than standard sized mattresses. Extra-long single bed sheets can be obtained in most department stores. Students are responsible for supplying their own bedding, including pillows.

Refrigerators are not provided in student rooms, but many students choose to purchase their own. Students should consult their Dorm Parent for information on securing a refrigerator. Typically, roommates may decide that one will purchase the refrigerator while the other buys something else for shared use, as only one refrigerator per room is permitted.

All boarding students have access to the dining hall during scheduled meal times only. There is no limit to the number of times a student may return to the food line for additional servings. Other options include:

• Weekend trips to local food stores offer students the opportunity to stock up on snacks. 
• The student center offers a variety of light meals and snacks during the school day. 
• There are a variety of restaurants within walking distance and food services students can order from as well. 

The dormitories are locked during the academic day and at night. When the dorms close for the night, the Dorm Parent will set the alarm. Students are not permitted to be in any building on campus when faculty members are not present.

To preserve student health and safety, all types of animals (mammals, reptiles, fish, etc.) are prohibited in all Academy dormitories.

The Academy does not cover personal belongings and is not held responsible for misplaced items.

• Keep a minimum amount of money (less than $50.00 cash) in the dormitory.
• Borrowing or lending money or personal property is discouraged.
• If you loan out personal property and an issue arises with the item, it is the responsibility of the parties involved to resolve the problem between themselves.

Room changes may be considered after the first two weeks of each semester, in accordance with the housing guidelines mentioned earlier. All room changes are subject to availability and the discretion of the Dean of Students.

As a diverse community, we strive to expose our students to a wide range of cultures and perspectives. To promote this, students from the same country are not assigned to room together. This approach not only fosters greater cultural integration but also encourages students to develop their communication skills.

Montverde Academy does not offer single rooms. 

Prefects are senior students who work closely with Dorm Parents and fellow students in the dormitories. They fulfill a variety of roles, including:

1. Helping students build strong communities in the dorm and on campus
2. Serving as a resource for students with personal or academic concerns
3. Guiding students through appropriate challenges while supporting core values and beliefs
4. Promoting positive community behavior
5. Leading by example in all areas.

Each lobby area landlines for local calls. Students cannot call long distance without a calling card.

Students have access to Orlando International Airport and a bus station for transportation at an additional cost. To arrange transportation, students must submit the transportation request (found on the student portal) at least 72 hours before departure. Late requests may be denied, and associated costs could increase significantly.

At the end of each school year, boarding students must fully vacate their room along with their belongings. Storage is not provided by the Academy.

Due to ongoing renovations and the use of residence halls for student employees, athletes, and summer conferences, students are not able to view or measure the rooms beforehand. The Academy does not maintain specific room dimensions.

You are allowed to have personal devices in your room. All students have Wi-Fi accounts for gaining access to online resources, including email, Google Drive, Canvas, and other School-related tools. Computer monitors are limited to 22" in order to preserve space in dorm rooms.

• All electrical appliances other than radios, stereo systems and clocks must have clearance of the Administration.
• Heaters and electric blankets are not allowed.
• Electric fans are subject to the approval of the Dorm Parent.

Smoking and vaping in forbidden anywhere on Montverde Academy property. Violations could lead to dismissal. 

Cooking equipment, heating elements, or cooking in rooms is not allowed.

Possession of firearms (including paint ball guns), fireworks, knives, clubs, chains, candles, incense, explosive caps, and/or inflammable fluids is not permitted.

Selling or buying clothes or any other personal property among students is prohibited. We recommend that students not bring expensive jewelry to the Academy. This will eliminate the possibility of losing or having it stolen.
