The Lower School will be welcoming Susan Resnick, author and educator with more than 30 years of experience, to present, “A Parent’s Guide to Understanding Singapore Math – The Fundamentals,” on Thursday, November 1 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
Ms. Resnick works passionately with private and public schools implementing mathematics curriculum. She focuses on bringing Singapore Math® to teachers in a way that builds their full comprehension of the core principles. Singapore Math relies heavily on visualization, utilizing physical objects and drawing diagrams to work through and solve math problems to understand the material on a deeper level, which differs greatly from much of our traditional American math instruction that utilizes drills and memorization of skills to solve math problems.
Many of the steps may seem strange to parents who learned math by routinely memorizing information such as multiplication tables, to solve math problems. For parents to assist their children with homework, understanding this different way of solving problems is a step in the right direction. With Singapore math there are multiple steps to illustrate how to get to the answer – versus the way many adults know how to quickly resolve a math problem without visually recording the steps. Getting to the right answer is important, but for a child to understand why it is the right answer leads to mastery of math and develops a child’s critical thinking capabilities.
We encourage parents to attend this informative presentation which will provide tips for parents so that they may better support their children in math studies as Mrs. Resnick will discuss the facets and answers questions about Singapore Math.
