Fifteen middle school students representing the Montverde Academy Builders Club attended the 80th annual Florida District Education and Leadership Conference (DCON). DCON is coordinated by the Florida District of Key Club and is attended by more than 2,000 students. Our group participated in four days of workshops, a zone caucus, entertainment assemblies, award assemblies, a service fair, a Governor’s banquet, and ball. The workshops demonstrated how to build a stronger Builders Club, enhance their public speaking skills, how they can serve on the Key Club board of directors in high school, or even serving for a higher calling within our Florida District.
The middle school students who attended include: Layla Aziz, Sam Boardman, Jayci Brauman, Jackson Eldridge, Belle France, Tyler Fricker, Lily Henne, Ethan Kaufman, Gabby Puryear-Lynch, Nico Nesmith, Sebastien Ressler, Shreyas Shakhamoori, Ryleigh Sperry, Christopher Vitito, and Kendall Walsworth.
Each of these students represented our school and their families with the utmost respect. They were early to events, dressed professionally in suits and dresses for the workshops, and willing to volunteer during each session. Our middle school students displayed their strong character while surrounded by high school students by raising their hands and participating in the conversations about leadership and confidence in the sessions. The service aspect of Key Club was illustrated in their service fair projects.
“I was extremely proud to be the advisor of these students who demonstrated our core values of knowledge, character and community,” said Mrs. DeJarnett, Builders Club advisor. “I would like to recognize and congratulate Tyler Fricker, the President of Builders Club, who presented a speech on our Angel Tree service project to an audience of more than 2,000 high school students.”
During his speech, amidst conference attendees cheering and clapping to recognize his excellent delivery, he recognized and thanked Montverde Academy and his fellow Builders Club members. Tyler won the International Speech Contest through Builders Club. This is the second year in a row that a member from MVA Builders Club has placed internationally in the speech contest.
Thank you to Mr. Del for allowing the students to attend the conference. Congratulations students!
