Congratulations to the Montverde Academy Lady Eagles soccer team for winning the Florida State Class 4A Championship! The Lady Eagles dominated the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A State Championship game with a resounding 4-0 win against Estero High School to finish the season with a 21-1 record.
“This team has challenged themselves to play their very best during every game to consistently improve throughout the entire season,” said Coach Robbie Aristodemo. “It is extremely rewarding to finish the season as class 4A champions. We showed a great deal of poise on the field and it was a fantastic final for our team be a part of.”
The Eagles controlled the game with the offense constantly moving into scoring position and the defense shutting down Estero’s attempts to attack. Montverde Academy commanded the tempo of the game, taking long range and up close shots to keep Estero’s defense fighting to deflect each Eagle scoring rush.
Jody Brown scored the Eagle’s first goal, ripping a shot past the goalkeeper in the 12th minute. The Wildcats attempted to score in the first half, but Montverde Academy goalkeeper, Julia Curatolo and the Eagles defense, shut down any opportunity. The Eagles added the second goal in the 55th minute when Shayla Smart, in her final game at MVA, broke through the Wildcats' defense to score. Maria Tregansin followed by firing a free kick in for a 3-0 advantage and Cecilie Neilsen secured the win by scoring on a header off a corner kick.
As the clock ran down, Montverde Academy coach Robbie Aristodemo and Estero coach, Libby Diamond, ensured every player got playing time in a state championship game.
Montverde Academy entered the game at No. 8 in MaxPreps' national rankings and was ranked No. 3 in the state in MaxPreps' all-classification poll. According to USA Today Sports Super 25 Expert Rankings, MVA ranks No. 8 nationally.
