Business, Finance, and Management SAC class welcomes John Moore
On Wednesday, March 1, the Business, Finance, and Management Study Area Concentration, under the direction of Economics teacher Mr. Lance Walsworth, added the topic of Management to their Spring series by hosting Guest Speaker Mr. John Moore, President of South Lake Hospital and Senior Vice President of Orlando Health. Mr. Moore joined Orlando Health in 1997, served as administrator of campus and business development of the current South Lake Hospital campus, and currently manages over 1400 personnel as South Lake County’s largest employer.
In discussing the role of management in his personal career path, Mr. Moore spoke about transferring skills from his early career as an athletic trainer to his current role, the goal of which he characterizes as “removing barriers so that employees can do their jobs.” When students posed questions about what skill set is most important to develop to be successful in management, Mr. Moore cited “problem-solving,” “humility,” and “compromise” – with a focus on developing relationships as key to being a successful leader on an exceptional team. His advice to students planning or just beginning their career paths included the importance of being creative, standing up for their creative ideas, and - from their first leadership position - being open to the ideas of others. In building his teams, he knows that “Good information equals good decisions.” After Mr. Moore’s presentation, students were sure that it was a “good decision” to attend!
As the 2017 Spring semester series continues, guest speakers include Mr. Harold Mills, vice chairman of ZeroChaos and member of the Federal Reserve Advisory Board; and Ms. Liefke Meyers, Orlando Economic Development Commission on March 31. The Business, Finance, and Management students look forward to welcoming these respected community members to our campus.
