Track & Field Keeping on Track with Training

Due to the COVID 19 preventative measures, many of the Montverde Academy spring sports had their season canceled for the remainder of the academic year. Despite the unexpected turn of events, the MVA track and field team continue to keep up with their training with the help of Lori Treweek, Head Coach, and Gerald Phiri, Sprint Coach. 
With the Microsoft Teams and Remind applications, the Eagles training is similar to what they would do leading up to the more competitive part of their season, which includes strength work using the exercises and online examples provided by Tim Crowley, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and two intense track training days per week and long runs that can be practiced at any location. According to Treweek, student-athletes are adjusting to their training schedule and keeping in shape for a potential season for the 2020-21 season.
"Many are still heading to the trails for runs, others are doing their workouts around their neighborhoods or in their back yards," said Treweek. "I am proud of their efforts. They are working hard to remain focused even when we aren't sure if the season will continue."
Phiri categorizes the virtual training for his sprinters into four areas: training, nutrition, assignments, and communication and within their training sessions, the program is personalized. Each athlete performs and records running drills which only require 10-20 meters of space. After the runners perform their drills, Phiri uses Hudl to analyze each video to provide proper feedback. The athletes also have accountability partners and have using FaceTime to communicate during workouts. 
For nutrition, athletes are required to keep a food journal which is emailed to Phiri for review. According to Phiri, nutrition is the most important part of being a sprinter and it can either make or break a runner. Journals are sent every Sunday as well as randomly checked to make sure each athlete is on track with their nutritional goals. 
Student-athletes also have assignments that involve analysis of videos that cover many different facets of sprinting such as acceleration, technique, sports psychology, and more. Their watch each video and summarize what they learned. 
Lastly, communication is vital in their track sessions. A group chat is utilized daily, which allows the athletes to build on their chemistry despite not being able to see each other. "It's great to see that our athletes are taking their training seriously and are having fun communicating with one another," said Phiri. "It is easy for an athlete to slack off without a track or their team, but our athletes are keeping their spirits and determination high despite the circumstances."
