The annual Roger R. Ross Academic Tournament was held on January 11 at Montverde Academy where 18 teams from across the Central Florida area met to compete. The teams had an exciting day of five preliminary matches where they went head-to-head with their teammates, followed by a bracket of the top eight teams.
In this tournament, MVA had two teams competing, Montverde Academy A and B Teams. The A Team with members: Matthew Karen, Addie Gerken, Andrea Barrows, AJ Aziz, and Akash Tandon, placed eighth after the preliminary rounds, bringing them into the quarterfinals against Vanguard A, the number one seed, who went on to win the tournament. The B Team, comprised of Adam Karen, Kendall Walsworth, Leah Guerard, Abigail Ryan, and Mia Hornberger, scored 11th after the preliminary rounds.
“I love my team and I’m happy to establish a thicker bond with people whom I wouldn’t be friends with otherwise!” said Abigail Ryan, B Team member.
MVA had some of the top scorers in the tournament: Matthew Karen in eighth; Adam Karen in 13th; Akash Tandon in 18th; and Kendall Walsworth in 30th place out of the total 95 players.
Congratulations to all of our student competitors! Thank you to all of the volunteers who generously gave their time and energy to make the tournament run smoothly.
Congratulations are also in order for Matthew Karen. Based on his performance at the 2019 Citronaut Invitational at University of Central Florida, he was invited by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) to participate in the Individual Player National Championship Tournament. The annual championship for individuals will be held in April in Rosemont, Illinois.
The Montverde Academy A and B teams have begun their weekly district competitions in Leesburg, Fla. to compete for a spot at the State Tournament. Best of luck to these academic competitors on the road to earn a spot at State!
