For ‘70s and ’80s fans, “Dancing Queen” was a captivating dance song. The Swedish pop group ABBA, was brought back to the forefront when its catchy music became the basis for a hit Broadway show in 1999, which then became a movie in 2008 starring Meryl Streep and a star-studded cast. “Mamma Mia!” hit the stage and enjoyed a 14-year run to become the eighth-longest running musical on Broadway. It was nominated for, but didn’t win, five Tony Awards and one Grammy; and it boasts two movies.
The Montverde Academy Theatre Department will present “Mamma Mia” on February 20-22. “Mamma Mia” tells the comical story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. This story takes place on a Greek island paradise on the eve of a wedding. Sophie, played by Kalin Gines, seeks to discover the identity of her father and has invited three potential candidates (portrayed by Aidan Fracker, Aiden Bjortvedt and Anthony Morehead) from her mother’s, Donna played by Peytann Tamasi, past to the island. Hilarity, singing and dancing commence. The cast is dancing and singing their way through rehearsals and are so excited to share this musical with audiences.
This fun tale of past love is made even more enjoyable with the iconic ABBA music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to include “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Mamma Mia,” woven throughout. It is sure to inspire singing and dancing in the seats as a surefire hit not to be missed!
The show runs February 20-22 with performances at 7:00 p.m. and two performances on Saturday, February 22 at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10, $15 and $25, available online HERE.
