Our second annual Convocation officially welcomed the new school year. The ceremony celebrates the diversity we enjoy by having each flag carried by a student native to that country. Students proudly represented their home countries, marching into the EdgeCenter to applause and cheers of all 1300+ MVA students. It was heartwarming to hear the cheers and support students show for each other. When the Bahamian flag entered the gym, the thunderous applause as a show of support for the island nation suffering the effects of Hurricane Dorian, was truly memorable.
Our talented musical students in the Advanced String Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Hanrich Claassen, performed music for the event which included senior Zayna JeBailey’s inspiring singing of the “National Anthem,” followed by a combined choir performance of “Morning has Come.” Dr. David Rath, Associate Head of School/Dean of Admission, welcomed everyone; Ms. Meristell Shackelford, Dean of the Lower School, gave the invocation, and Dr. Kasey C. Kesselring, Headmaster, delivered his address to students, faculty, staff, distinguished guests, and parents.
“We should embrace this opportunity of getting to know people from all around the world,” said Carolina Chaves, head prefect for the Class of 2020 in her remarks to fellow students. “Not everyone has this chance, it’s a perfect opportunity for us to open our minds and try new things. The amazing thing about Montverde Academy is that even though we are a vast community with people from all around the world, we are still united. I am from Brazil, but here I have grown my family to include brothers and sisters from Vietnam, Finland, Haiti, Canada, Spain, and so on. I encourage you to take advantage of your unique situation and expand your family, knowledge and understanding of the world as much as you can. Have a great school year!”
