Congratulations to R.J. Barrett (’18) #3 Draft Pick

Congratulations to R.J. Barrett (’18) who was the third draft pick from Duke University in the NBA 2019 Draft. He was emotional after being selected by the New York Knicks and achieving a dream he wrote down when he was just 12 years old. R.J. came to MVA in his freshman year and was a driven player. In the 2017-18 season, he led the boys varsity team to the 2018 GEICO National High School Basketball Championship and enjoyed an undefeated season with a record of 35-0. While here, he earned the Gatorade National Player of the Year, Morgan Wootten Player of the Year, USA Today Player of the Year, MaxPreps Player of the Year, Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and was a McDonald’s All-American.

From MVA, R.J. matriculated to Duke University to play with freshmen teammates Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones, who were a dominating force on the court. He enjoyed an exciting season with Duke making it to the Elite Eight, falling to the Michigan State Spartans in a close 68-67 loss.

“Thank you to Dr. Kesselring, Coach Boyle, Coach Miller, all my coaches, and teachers at Montverde Academy for always pushing me to be the best I could on the court and in the classroom,” said R.J. "We did it the hard way, never took the easy way out. Thank you for helping me to achieve my dream of playing in the NBA!”

“My wife and I are very thankful to the educators and coaches at Montverde Academy for their integrity, high standards, discipline, and rigor that they provided on the court, in the classroom and in the community, helping both of our sons,” said Rowan Barrett Sr. “We trusted Montverde Academy to help educate our children and help grow them into models citizens, and they have done just that. Now as R.J. has made it to the highest level in the sport of basketball, our family would like to thank you for the indelible mark that you have left on our son in providing him a launch pad into life. Thank you!!”

Congratulations again to R.J. and his family for achieving his dream of playing in the NBA!
