The girls’ varsity Eagles soccer team has earned a 23-0-0 undefeated season by defeating Archbishop McCarthy 1-0 in the FHSAA Girls State Soccer Championship played at Stetson University in Deland, Fla. This is the third trip to the championship game and the second win in a row.
It was a tough game against the Mavericks, as combined the two teams have a 48-0 record. Our girls did an impressive job of controlling the game and the ball with the Mavericks only taking four shots on goal and spending much of their time chasing down the ball to try and gain any advantage. Our Eagles are a young team with five seniors – there are sophomores and freshman starting as well as eighth-grade student-athletes who spend significant time playing.
Isabella Flanigan, eighth grade student-athlete, had the assist on the only goal in a state final which was scored by Jody Brown. This was Jody’s 32nd goal for the season. Isabella forced Archbishop McCarthy’s goalkeeper away from the goal while approaching the end line from the right side midway through the second half. She passed to Jody at the top of the 6-yard box, where she was able to send it past a defender to score with nearly 20 minutes left to play in the half.
“I dribbled down to the corner [of the goal], then saw the goalkeeper come out, and when I saw Jody there I wanted her to have it,” Isabella told the Orlando Sentinel reporter. “I wasn’t expecting it,” said Jody, who also plays for the Jamaican national team. “When I got the ball I thought the defender would save it, but when I saw it go in I was so happy.”
Senior Sabrina Botran, goalkeeper, had seven saves. Alexis Ayers, sophomore, had a shot on goal deflected. Players Maria Tregansin, Vivianne Bessette and Kendall Ayers also played well on the defense. The team is comprised of Alexis Ayers, Kendall Ayers, Vivianne Bessette, Sabrina Botran, Jody Brown, Maria Contreras, Kalia Cortes, Hannah Davies, Briyah Drayton, Domenica Facusse, Isabella Flanigan, Amanda Gerhartz, Addie Gerken, Grace Hinerman, Kalena Iwashita, Oona Jokinen, Milla Maria Kujala, Carmen Marin, Xashlie Negron, Isabella Ramirez, Isabella Recinos, Sydney Rivera, Gracie Sodermark, Maria Tregansin, Evegania Tsolakis, and Valeria Vives Herrera.
The team ends the season with impressive numbers – 23-0-0 for the 2018-19 season, 20 shutouts for the season with 13 of them in a row. This year, the team has beaten eight of the teams that went to the Final Four in each of the four other classes; St. John's Country Day in 1A, Bolles and Academy of the Holy Names in 2A, American Heritage Plantation in 3A, Archbishop McCarthy and Bartram Trail in 4A, and Vero Beach and Lake Mary in 5A.
“We are so very proud of the amazing season this team has achieved,” said Coach Robbie Aristodemo. “The girls have worked incredibly hard all season and it is apparent from the record we have accomplished, that the dedication has paid off. They all work really well together which shows up on the pitch in how they communicate and control the game. We’re thrilled to bring home this championship.”
