Visiting Author Series Features Dr. Gregg Bocketti

As part of our Authors on Campus series the MVA English Department offers, students and faculty were pleased to welcome Dr. Gregg Bocketti, author and professor, to our campus.
Dr. Bocketti joined us from Transylvania University where he teaches classes in Western Civilization, Sports and Public Celebrations in Latin America and History of Brazil. His most current publication - and what drew us to invite him to MVA - is the sports history research text, “The Invention of the Beautiful Game, Football and the Making Of Modern Brazil.”
Throughout his time with us, Dr. Bocketti led conversations with students on many of his favorite topics including research and questioning techniques with AP Research and Seminar class and the role of women as spectators and supporters in the early years of professional soccer in Brazil with our English Honors Symposium students. He also spent time with all of our MVA SIMA players talking about professionalism and the agency of players throughout the history of professional soccer. “We had a lot of connection [to the author’s speech] from a SIMA perspective,” said Mike Potempa, SIMA Head Coach. “I think it was an excellent choice to bring him to our campus.”
On October 23, Dr. Bocketti gave his final talk based on the research and publication process of his book and the content of its epilogue- Brazil and the World Cup. Students asked a variety of questions about the ties between the Brazilian economy and soccer, the persistence of the research process and connections we could make with other countries and other sports. Senior Jade Dinh reflected, “From his story, I learned the lessons of resilience, of patience and of trust.”
It was our great pleasure to host Dr. Gregg Bocketti as Fall 2018 Author on Campus. Special thanks to Mr. David Bernatavitz, Mr. Brad Long and SIMA coaches Mike Potempa and Kevin Varnado for helping the MVA English Department put all the moving parts of this visit together!
