Business, Finance and Management SAC Hears from Speaker
The Business, Finance and Management Study Area Concentration, led by economics teacher Mr. Lance Walsworth, began their spring series with guest speaker, Ms. Jill Swidler, director, investor relations from the Orlando Economic Partnership. Ms. Swidler has a background in marketing and communications, holding past positions at Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts, LEGOLAND Florida, Sea World, and Anheuser-Busch.
Ms. Swidler shared insight she gained in her career, with a focus on helping students construct a path to a successful career in a job that they love. She talked about the necessity of forming quality relationships and cultivating them over time, citing various examples of networking throughout her career. As a woman in business, she found the positive impact she has on other women refreshing and empowering. The importance of knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of colleagues, is critical in order to build a strong team.
Other topics she discussed included how to form a “30 second elevator speech” and shared examples; and she emphasized the importance of volunteer work, providing illustrations and inspiration for students to find internships that connect to their passion and potentially lead to next steps in a career path. In response to student and faculty questions, Ms. Swidler cited relationships as the most important aspect for success in achieving their personal career goals and encouraged our MVA students to stay connected to each other and to the Academy throughout their college and professional careers.
The Business, Finance, and Management students appreciated the opportunity to welcome Ms. Jill Swidler to our campus!
