Grade 6
In grade 6, students begin a journey of skill development across a variety of subjects, laying the groundwork for future academic success. Key aspects of their experience include:
- Critical Thinking & Reasoning: Students develop abstract thinking and deductive reasoning skills, learning to view the world from multiple perspectives.
- Spanish Language & Culture: Introduction to the Spanish language, culture, and history of Spanish-speaking communities.
- Arts Rotations: Students explore various arts disciplines, broadening their creative expression.
- Athletics & Clubs: Participation in athletic programs and student organizations, fostering teamwork and collaboration.
- Organizational & Study Skills: Growth in time management, goal-setting, and the development of strategies for independent learning.
This year is pivotal for building the foundational skills needed for future academic challenges and empowering students to take increasing ownership of their learning.
Grades 7 & 8
In grades 7 and 8, students build on this foundation, exploring deeper connections across subjects and beginning to articulate their own perspectives on the world. Key elements of their experience include:
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Students continue to develop their ability to think critically and propose solutions to real-world problems.
- Academic Risk-Taking: Encouraged to challenge their thinking, students explore new ideas, develop hypotheses, and examine global, local, and personal issues from multiple viewpoints.
- Electives & Personal Interests: Students explore new areas of interest through elective courses, clubs, and enrichment activities, honing skills in areas they are passionate about.
- Community Engagement & Service: Students cultivate empathy, understanding, and a desire for justice, seeking opportunities for service and authentic engagement with their school and the broader community.
- Ownership of Learning: With an increasing sense of responsibility for their education, students develop strong organizational skills and prepare for the demands of Upper School.
