From Teammates to Role Models: MVA Volleyball’s Impact Beyond the Game

From Teammates to Role Models: MVA Volleyball’s Impact Beyond the Game

The Montverde Academy volleyball program is making an impact that goes far beyond the court through the “Adopt-a-Class” initiative in the Lower School.

As part of this core initiative of the Soar to Success Program, this season, members of the volleyball team have partnered with a Lower School class, building meaningful connections with younger students through shared activities, mentorship, and plenty of smiles. Throughout the year, the student-athletes spend time reading together, helping with classroom activities, playing games, and simply being positive role models.

For the younger students, the visits are a highlight of their week. They look up to the student-athletes not only as sports stars, but as leaders and friends. “I like that we have a volleyball buddy because she’s nice and she talks to us about playing volleyball and what high school is like,” said fourth grader Amelia Areinamo. “She also asked us questions about ourselves to get to know us better.”

For the volleyball players, the experience offers a chance to give back, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in a whole new way. “I’ve had a great experience,” shared team member Sofia Amador. “I’ve been able to bond and connect with the kids while setting a good example for them.”

The program reflects the heart of the school community — where older students support younger ones, and learning goes beyond academics.

"The Adopt-a-Class program has really been a full circle moment for me," said Nybia Rivera-Alvarez. "When I was little, I remember having basketball buddies that I looked up to and now that I’m in high school I get to be a volleyball buddy. I am able to give back and it feels amazing to build that connection with the kids knowing that these are memories that they will remember and I get to be a part of them."

Through teamwork, encouragement, and fun, the volleyball team helps build confidence, school spirit, and lasting connections across grade levels.
