Eagle Abroad: Exploring Government and Diplomacy in Egypt

This summer, rising junior Alessandro Oporto participated in an internship with the United States government at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, where he contributed to a wide range of operational, administrative, and diplomatic support activities. This experience allowed him to work in a fast-paced international environment while developing strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

One of his key responsibilities was assisting with the coordination of VIP entry and logistics for official events, including the management of guest access, ensuring security procedures were followed, and supporting the smooth execution of high-profile embassy functions involving government officials and distinguished guests.

He also worked on reviewing, updating, and editing government policies and internal documentation and helped ensure that materials were accurate, well-organized, and reflected current procedures, contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of embassy operations.

His internship also involved working alongside local embassy teams to prepare housing for newly arriving embassy families and traveling with local crews to set up residences by organizing and arranging furniture, ensuring homes were fully furnished and ready for occupancy before families arrived. This effort required teamwork, attention to detail, and adaptability while working with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.

"This internship provided valuable hands-on experience in government operations, event coordination, policy administration, and logistical support within a U.S. diplomatic mission overseas," said Alessandro. "The opportunity strengthened my leadership, collaboration, and professional communication skills while giving me firsthand insight into the day-to-day work that supports U.S. diplomatic operations abroad."
