District Champions!

District Champions!

After eighty minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtimes, the Montverde Academy girls soccer team played Lake Highland Prep to a scoreless tie, before netting a trio of goals to win the battle of penalty kicks in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 3A District 6 championship on campus Tuesday evening.

It was expected to be an even and gritty matchup between these fierce Central Florida rivals, with the possession shared by both teams, an abundance of fouls, and no goals scored.

Thirty-two minutes into the first half a Highlanders through pass found Laura Almeida for the Highlanders who's cross was stopped by Eagles goalkeeper Alyssa Strausbaugh.

The Eagles started off the second half off strong with relentless pressure from some crosses by Joy Palacios and a well placed shot by Riley Davison who forced a save from the Highlander goalkeeper.

It was forty-eight minutes into the match when the Highlanders created a chance from point blank range which forced another great save by Strausbaugh to keep the score deadlocked at nil-nil.

It was a foul by the Eagles defense that created a penalty kick chance for Lake Highland Prep in the fifty-forth minute that exemplified the fortunes to come for MVA. The penalty kick was saved feet first by Strausbaugh keeping the game tied.

When it was all said and done, the game had not seen a goal, and penalty kicks would decide the winner in the district championship rematch from last season (which MVA had won 2-1).

While the Eagles scored three goals on four tries (one from Lola Rey in round two, Kendall Seays in round three and Isabella Igua in round four), the hero of the evening was Strausbaugh. Strausbaugh made two saves in the shootout, leaving the Highlanders without a goal in the shootout which led to the Eagles championship.

The next game is on Tuesday, February 11 when the Eagles play in the first round of the FHSAA Regional Tournament against an opponent to be determined.
