David Zhang Visits the Hemudu Archaeological Site

This summer, senior Han “David” Zhang visited the Hemudu Archaeological Site in Ningbo, Zhejiang, one of the most significant Neolithic settlements in ancient China, dating back more than 7,000 years.

During his visit, David explored reconstructed wooden and thatched homes and learned about the ingenuity of early civilizations. He discovered how ancient people developed tools for hunting and fishing, crafted ceramic pots and containers for cooking and storage, and created innovative solutions to support daily life.

The experience gave David a deeper appreciation for Chinese history, particularly the Hemudu people’s advanced rice cultivation techniques. Their transition from a fishing-based lifestyle to rice farming and trade helped shape one of the earliest economic systems in the region.

This meaningful experience allowed David to gain valuable insight into the achievements of one of China’s earliest civilizations and deepen his understanding of the country’s rich historical heritage.
