Middle School

Bible Study

Using the English Standard translation, the club will study various sections of the Bible (Old and New Testament) and discuss them. A field trip to the Holy Land Experience in Orlando is a possibility, and community service and outreach will be practiced. Off campus Bible Studies will be offered.

Drama

The curriculum would include drama games, monologues, and short skits. Purpose of the course would be to strengthen creative skills and give students the opportunity to decide if they want to be part of the spring production. Students would be told in advance that this is a voluntary course and the instructor has the authority to remove them from the course if they are wasting either their time or causing other students to have their time wasted. Second semester course would be a more complicated course culminating in a show. Students would have to audition to participate and the criteria would be based on student responsibility and dedication with a recommendation from their homeroom teacher.

Student Government

The middle school student government will be built on the same premise as the upper school student government. The mission of the club is to train middle level students to be a part of student government, as well as, learning leadership skills, using Robert̉³ Rules of Order, and practicing diplomacy skills.

We will conclude with one or two contemporary philosophers, such as Heidegger, Arendt, Wittgenstein, Marcuse, Sartre, Haberams, and Rorty. The readings will be spread out so that they will not interfere with class work.

The Academic Team competes in various tournaments throughout the school year by answering questions pertaining to history, literature, science, math, art, music and an array of other subject areas. Students practice in competition format using a lock out buzzer system and students in Grades 10-12 normally compete on the Varsity team while students in Grades 7-9 form the JV team. The team(s) will participate in tournaments at the University of Florida, University of Georgia, Stetson University, Lake Sumter Community College and at Ocala Vanguard and Taylor Co. High Schools.

Debate Team
Sponsor: Ms. Dona-Morice

Montverde Academy's debate team competes in this year's top ranked district in the United States. We have competed so far in Public Forum ("Turner") debate, in which two person teams debate a current event. Debate probably requires a greater time commitment than any other club on this list. We will try to attend eight tournaments this year and preparing fully for each requires as much work as a class project. For that reason, it's also probably the most valuable to college admissions departments. And there's no doubt that winning a round based on your hard work and quick thinking is a thrill unlike any other. Don't let fear of public speaking keep you away. More debates are won by research and by listening than by smooth delivery.

Math Club
Sponsors: Ms. Dietrich

The purpose of the Math Club is to practice for two national math contests which are held at various times throughout the school year and an annual team competition hosted by Lake Sumter Community College in April. Members who perform well will qualify for special awards.

Model United Nations

The United Nations debates every international problem the world faces. Our Model United Nations club will attend one or two conferences in which high school students from across the region will simulate the debates and decisions of the real U.N. Students who choose to participate in Model U.N. can expect to learn more about what's going on in the world and to grow as public speakers and as researchers, though you don't need any speech or research experience to join. The world's a mess. Be a part of the solution.
