In the summer of 1912, the scheme of launching this institution was put into operation by the people of Montverde cooperating with Professor H.P. Carpenter, from Winchester, Kentucky. These gentlemen, convinced that there are hundreds of boys and girls turned away from our church, state and private schools annually on the account of limited means, decided to launch an institution that would make provision for this class and at the same time train the heart, head and hand. A stock company was formed, a board elected and sufficient stock sold for a beginning to be made. The County Board joined in the project and at once operations began for establishing a Christian industrial school. It was not the purpose of these Boards to found another college, for they are already in abundance, but it was unanimously agreed that there was an urgent need for a training school that would make provision for those who have been so long neglected.
The Montverde Industrial School opened its doors September 23, 1912. School had began in an old building and a church and moved to the new administration building at its completion the following January. Two teachers and considerable equipment were added at this time. Later three more village blocks were purchased; one for a boys dormitory, one for a girls dormitory and a third for broom and canning factories.
At the beginning of the school, a score of students were turned away for lack of boarding facilities so the good people of Montverde and friends in the county and elsewhere contributed toward a new dormitory. The Montverde people first gave money and later gave muscle without remuneration and thus erected a $4,000 building at a cost of $1,500. Machinery for both the broom and canning factories with other needed equipment was added later. |
