College Guidance
The college placement process at Montverde Academy begins early in the high school career. Students are immediately introduced to several opportunities that invite them to explore college placement and all that it entails.
Freshmen begin the college placement process by taking the PSAT and the PLAN. These two tests prepare students for the SAT and the ACT which are required for college admission to most US colleges and universities.
Sophomores continue the college placement process by also taking the PSAT and the PLAN. Additionally participate in the “Sophomore College Experience” which is an all day field trip to two colleges or universities. A private tour of the college or university is given to the students along with an informal informational session on what is involved in the college selection process. Sophomores (along with the juniors and seniors) are also encouraged to visit with the 75 plus college representatives who visit Montverde Academy annually.
Juniors continue the college placement process initiated during the freshman and sophomore year by also taking the PSAT and in doing so, they are able to enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Juniors are required to take the SAT and the ACT. Juniors are required to take an SAT prep course which includes intense preparation for the SAT. Included within the SAT prep course is individual time with the Director of College counseling weekly to assist students with the creation of their college application packets. Students are engaged in a series of discussions and exercises that introduces them to the college research process, including but not limited to, how to obtain teacher recommendations, writing essays, interviewing, resume writing, scholarships, and NCAA Clearing House rules and regulations. In February, they attend a college fair where approximately 130 college admission representatives are available for informal interviews and candid informational sessions.
Seniors begin the process in August at the Senior Retreat registering for their final SAT and ACT, completing college lists, and learning about deadlines and expectations. All seniors are required to apply to no less than six colleges and universities. Seniors are given careful attention during the Fall Semester in order to assist them with this process. In October, they attend a college fair to meet with college representatives to aid them in finalizing their college lists. International students complete the same process and to help them better prepare for the college admission process, the TOEFL is offered at Montverde Academy.
Success of the Academy’s college placement process is measured by the 100% college acceptance rate. Montverde Academy graduates receive multiple acceptances, with many receiving acceptances to their first choice.
Montverde Academy graduates have been accepted to prestigious colleges and universities such as Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Los Angeles, University of Florida, Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest, and Wellesley College to name a few.
