The Montverde Academy Varsity Basketball team has attained some impressive seasons in the past few years that includes being nationally ranked and credited for sending many players on to the collegiate level. This year is no exception as the Eagles return to action after achieving a respectable record (25-5) and notable wins last season that included beating New York champ Mount Vernon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) at the Iolani Classic in Hawaii. The MVA Eagles are ranked in the top 35 teams in America according to the 2011 Pre-season High-School National Powerade Fab 50 Boys Basketball Rankings.
To be a member of the MVA Varsity Basketball Program, players must perform well in both academics and athletics with an appreciation and focus on hard work and the desire to grow spiritually, physically, and intellectually as a person. Upon completion of their MVA career, players will be a full NCAA Academic Qualifier and have learned valuable lessons pertaining to mutual respect, diversity, and the perseverance and skills attained with a good work ethic. A member of the team will become a disciplined person, a successful athlete, and an educated student who will incorporate MVA teachings on and off the court that in turn will prepare him for the next phase of his life.
The MVA Basketball Program, coached by Coach Kevin Boyle, is recognized as one of the top basketball programs in the nation. MVA successes include a National Championship by HoopsUSA.com, 2006-2007 season and 2010 ESPN/Rise Magazine National High School Invitational National Champion Runner Up. In addition, 40 MVA graduates received NCAA scholarships with two continuing on to the NBA.
As Head Basketball Coach, Coach Boyle has achieved over two decades of high school basketball success that comprises 23 titles and awards of recognition that include the 2011 Naismith Coach of the Year, the 2009 ESPN National Coach of the Year, and the 2007 USA Today National Coach of the Year. Coach Boyle is one of only four coaches in high school basketball history to win the National Coach of the Year honor three times. Coach Boyle is an excellent motivator who is nationally respected for his victorious career record of 551 wins and 129 losses.
"Kevin Boyle is one of the best at utilizing the game of basketball as a tool for personal growth and self-development for young athletes. Through his extensive knowledge of the game, teaching style, and competitive drive for excellence, he has transformed the lives of many players into well rounded students, superior athletes, and strong citizens." commented Phil Weber, Assistant Coach, New York Knicks.
